III. NATIONAL SCHOOL LIBRARIANS CONFERENCE
“Advanced Level Applications at the School Libraries”
Reading is one of the fundamental and most fulfilling learning tools. It is a personal, intellectual and creative process. Reading helps children express themselves in an appropriate and meaningful way, while helping students develop their creativity, abstract thinking, intellectual and motor skills.
Childhood is a vital stage of life when people develop basic habits such as reading. Therefore, the habit of reading needs to be nurtured during childhood and supported during the adolescent period.
If a child perceives reading as pleasant and important, it will mean the development of positive reading habits will develop a lot easier. A student who reads, thinks, criticises, and is invested in the acquisition of knowledge becomes a modern, democratic person. Reading is fundamental to a quality, modern life and is a necessary tool for adapting to change. Due to these reasons, the role of school libraries and librarians in young peoples’ lives are paramount.
School librarians must use modern technological research solutions as much as the traditional services, in order to serve a dynamic group of students and teachers. Therefore, librarians must be aware of the opportunities in existence and use them appropriately to serve children and teachers in the most effective way.
In a modern world, students use new technological networks such as Twitter, Youtube and Facebook to socialise and have fun. Instead of banning these networks, students should be lead to use these services to learn and share information.
The subjects below will be shared at the conference:
- Choosing an appropriate book,
- Importance of information literacy and use of libraries,
- Applications to improve reading habits and use of libraries,
- Use of the web tools such as web diaries, wiki, media sharing sites at the libraries (Facebook, YouTube, MySpace etc...)
